Parent Resources

Five Resources for Parents to Use at Home with their Students

1. Rewordify (https://rewordify.com/index.php)

Rewordify is an online tool which simplifies and/or defines complex English. It also has a word bank that teaches complex phrases or words in “quiz” mode. It even labels parts of speech on the text you have created! Use this to help teach vocabulary or improve English comprehension.

2. Newsela (https://newsela.com/)

This website allows your classroom to all engage in non-fiction news articles regardless of their reading level. This is beneficial for ELL students or students who are struggling with academic language. This website also allows students to take quizzes and and complete assignments after they have completed reading an article.

3. BrainPop (https://www.brainpop.com/games/)

BrainPop has an excellent selection of games to teach a variety of subjects. In addition to the regular BrainPop games, there are also K-3 BrainPop Jr. games and BrainPop Games for ELL. There are plenty of resources here to teach everything from health to science. It's a great site that can serve as a "warehouse" for games.

4. Made With Code (https://www.madewithcode.com/)

Google's Made With Code project has a mission of encouraging girls to pursue careers in computer science. The Made With Code projects are easy to follow, and if your kids are completely new to coding, don't fret. There's something for both intermediate and beginning coders. Plus, there are even more tutorials in the Resources section with new offerings released periodically.

5. Computing Lessons on Khan Academy (https://www.khanacademy.org/computing)

Khan Academy's self-paced courses introduce a number of fascinating coding concepts to kids. From learning the basics of computer programming and animation, to more complex computer science subjects, these lessons are the perfect jumping off point for curious students.
